Randy Hines of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) holds a plastic bin containing a hooded merganser. A tracking device was implanted in the bird during a short surgical procedure. A total of eight birds will be tracked in order to learn more their breeding habits. Hooded mergansers are becoming scarce in parts of Iowa, Illinois and the Lower Mississippi River.
