Ever wonder what Paul's writing was like back when he first started? Have you ever wanted to see some of the first comedic features Paul ever wrote? Well, now you can. I've uploaded pictures of seven humor articles I wrote back in 1997 for the Spartan Spotlite, the student newspaper for Richfield High School, which I attended. I've also uploaded a letter to the editor written about me by some fans back then, plus pictures of two ramblings columns I wrote then (which are already on this site, but have some extra content).
Guess What? Shut Up!"Guess What? Shut Up!" was an ongoing feature written by my friend Ian Talty and I. After the first installment, the word "suck" and the phrase "shut up" were banned from our student newspaper by the school's administration. There's some inside jokes, but some genuinely funny stuff, too. I'll let you guess which ones I wrote and which ones Ian wrote.GWSU #1 (February issue, 1997)
20 QuestionsThis feature involved humorous interviews I did with faculty and students. To give you some context, Mr. Duffee was a goofball science teacher, Dave Schleifer was a good friend of mine who was rather talented at drinking, and the guy dressed up in the Batman costume was Mike Schwalen, another goofy friend of mine. Just to warn you, though, batman guy makes a lot of inside jokes.20 Questions #1 (February issue, 1997) 20 Questions #2 (March issue, 1997) 20 Questions #3 (April issue, 1997)
1970s Pants PageThis was a collage I put together, made up entirely of advertisements for pants I found in old 1970s issues of the student newspaper. The ads are actually quite entertaining to look at. My favorite is the one on the first page that says, "The look: devious. The slacks: charger flares, the action man slacks."'70s Pants Page (June issue, 1997)
Letter to the EditorAfter the word "suck" and phrase "shut up" were banned from our newspaper, my friend Ian and I continued to be harassed by the school's administration for what they viewed as negative and inappropriate articles. Once we even got called down into a guidance counselor's office for a 30-minute lecture on how pessimistic things we had written could someday cause a suicidal student to off themselves. I'm not kidding. Anyway, a few students wrote in to defend us.Letter to the Editor (April issue, 1997)
Ramblings ColumnsRamblings actually started when I was in high school. I wrote four ramblings columns then, and I have included visuals here of high school columns number two and three on this website. The high school columns on this website are edited to take out inside jokes, but the visuals of the columns I'm providing here have the full text.Ramblings Column 2 (March issue, 1997) Ramblings Column 3 (April issue, 1997)
