Summary, More Details on Services

Netflix: The longstanding champion. The prices are a bit higher, but Netflix has more information and an easier browsing experience than any other service. Blockbuster has some good extras, but Netflix's ultra quick customer service and large amount of distribution centers keeps them on top.

Blockbuster: This service is way better than I thought it would be. They've matched Netflix in titles, and offer them at the same price. They also provide users with four free rentals from their regular stores each month, which comes in handy if you want a movie for that night, instead of waiting for it in the mail. My only complaint is their customer service is terrible. They took over 22 hours to respond to simple questions, and then refused to tell me where their distribution centers are located. They claim it's a "security issue". Since estimated shipping times are usually wrong, why would I switch from Netflix unless I'm sure there's a distribution center nearby? Cripes. Nice to see Blockbuster's anal online policies mirror that of their anal in-store policies.

Walmart: This is the cheapest price you'll find, but it comes at a cost. They only have 15,000 titles, and their website doesn't have recommendations, which is a nice feature to have. It's kind of dumb for them to allow people to rate movies when it won't get them any recommendations. Walmart's e-mail response time is just as bad as Blockbuster's, and their website is kind of blah to look at. But they do offer the longest free trial and the lowest prices, so some people may like Walmart's service better. But beware: Walmart's privacy statement says, "We will share personal customer information...offering certain products and services in connection with our Web site...", which means they're going to send you spam mail. OUT OF BUSINESS.

Gamez n Flix: If they had more features, Gamez n Flix would be the best deal on here. Depending on what you're looking for in an online rental service, they might still be the best. They have lots of titles, the cheapest prices (including a cheap long-term option), and good customer service. However, they also make it very difficult to steal. They track each movie or game through the mail, and know for sure whether or not it was delivered to you. But if you don't mind the stripped down features, Gamez n Flix offers a fantastic deal.

Green Cine: This service has a few less titles and a bit slower delivery service than Netflix, but that's not the point of Green Cine. They specialize in hard to find DVDs, and they have some great stuff. Green Cine's categories include anime, cult, documentary, film noir, foreign language, adult (porn!), gay and lesbian, indie, instructional (yoga tapes and other weird stuff), mignight viewing (really weird stuff), silent film, special interest, and television (they have episodes of nightline. No joke). I seriously want to rent everything this service has. A portion of Green Cine's profits go to film arts organizations, which is nice, and if you need more reasons to join, they offer downloadable movies (which expire after 10 days) and streaming movies.

DVD Avenue: Meh. DVD Avenue isn't bad. Their main appeal is you can rent video games (PS2/PS/Xbox) as well as DVD's. Their rating system sucks, and is (as I said before) pretty worthless without recommendations, but their customer service is fast.

Qwik Fliks: Their website looks like a 12-year-old designed it, but don't let that fool you. Qwik Fliks has lots of titles, offers user reviews and quality information for their movies, and has fast customer service. They also have adult titles, though it costs an extra $4.95/month to access them. You can choose from standard rental plans or "rapid return" ones where you pay less but only get a certain number of movies per month. The upside to this option is you can change how many movies you want, and therefore the price you pay, each month. My only complaint is Qwik Flik seems to take a while to make new releases available.

Rent DVD Here: This is the dumbest name I've ever heard, and their rental service isn't much better. They have a meager amount of titles, and no features outside of e-mail confirmations. They also took over three hours to answer a simple e-mail sent during business hours, asking them how long they've been in business. The only thing keeping me from dropping trou and taking a dump on them is their decent prices and easy to browse website.

DV Dango: If anyone knows what "DV Dango" means, please let me know. If you visit their website, watch your eyes. You may go blind from all the suckiness present. They have the worst selection of movies on the Internet, and a user interface that will make you wonder just why the hell you're paying for it. They also took 7 business hours to reply to a simple e-mail question. The only thing that doesn't suck about this service is they offer a free trial. Which reminds me, it's time to cancel mine. They currently are not accepting new subscribers, which probably means they're going to be out of business soon.
