Summary, More Details on Services

Gamefly: Very professional looking website with a nice look. The amount of information they give on each game is especially nice. Along with the basic info, they also have screenshots (very helpful), a review, and the game instructions. However, this service does have some downsides. The prices, especially for three games at a time, are high, and their customer service sucks. I got no response from them after three days. Gamefly is probably the lesser of the four services that got an "awesome" rating. However, if you're a parent who's afraid of what your kids will rent, Gamefly does offer parental controls with a separate password.

Gamez n Flix: If they had some features, Gamez n Flix would be the best deal on here. Depending on what you're looking for in an online rental service, they might still be the best. They have the cheapest prices across the board (including a cheap long-term option), and good customer service. Unfortunately, they offer little to no information on their movies and games, with no ratings or reviews. They also make it very difficult to steal. They track each movie or game through the mail, and know for sure whether or not it was delivered to you. But if you don't mind the stripped down features, Gamez n Flix offers a fantastic deal.

Gamerang: This service takes a close second place to Gplay. They have lots of titles, modest prices, good customer service, and four distribution centers that insure you'll get your games fast. You'll also know the estimated arrival date from the queue, which is something most services don't have for games, for some reason. Gamerang also has great game info, including screenshots and cheats. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a game that actually has screenshots or cheats included. It must be a feature that's in the works.

Gplay: This service may be the best of the best. It has the easiest and best user interface, with the layout looking more like the DVD rental services. The game info is great, with screenshots and lots of other information, and the features are nice, with ratings and user reviews. Another nice feature is your free trial doesn't start until the first game is shipped to you, which helps since a lot of services take their sweet time sending out your first game. The only thing this service could use is a better login system. You have to enter your info every time you sign in, with no "remember me" option.

Player's Choice: And now we start the downward decline into services that are "just good enough" to not get a sucky rating. The only thing saving Player's Choice from the Mr. Yuck face rating is they're the only service with recommendations, and they offer both games and DVDs. They also offer PC games, which is a nice touch. However, I'm not sure why anyone would sign up for this service when there's no way to preview it. You're not even allowed to browse the list of games before signing up, which is why I have no screenshots for this service. Their customer service is equally terrible, with no response until a week after I e-mailed them. Also keep in mind that you will automatically be signed up for spam newsletters when signing up for this service, though you can opt out of them easily enough.

Gamelender: The best thing about Gamelender is their wide variety of systems. They're the only service to offer Nokia N-Gage games, as well as old school games like NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis. Gamelender's customer service is also unbeatable. Unfortunately, they don't offer e-mail notifications when they ship you a new game, their game info is okay at best, and their website may be a little slow if your Internet browser has trouble with Macromedia Flash.

Red Octane: This service claims to be the longest running (online since 1999), which makes me wonder why they haven't added any features at any point. Red Octane's prices and selection are great, and they even offer anime DVDs in addition to games, but everything else seems to suck. Their customer service gave no response after three days, and they give no leeway on stealing games (rightfully so, of course), charging $60-$80 for any games "lost in the mail". Which, of course, means if you really do break or lose a game, it's cheaper to just go buy a new one and send it back to them.

Numbthumb: If Numbthumb's website didn't look like a 1986 issue of Nintendo Power magazine, they might make a better first impression. But fear not, this isn't a lesser service. Numbthumb offers very good customer service, decent game info, and parental controls with a separate password. One should be aware, however, that your trial membership games must be returned within the trial period, or you'll be charged for a full membership. And that's no good, since Numbthumb's prices are a little high. Also, make sure you don't try and steal from this service. If you claim a game to be lost in the mail, they'll require you to fill out a post office loss report, which means you'll be guilty of mail fraud as well as stealing.

Game Replay: This service doesn't state how many titles available, and only carries PS2 and Xbox games. They also only offer one rental package, though it has a good price. Their customer service is good, their game info is inadequate, and they don't tolerate stealing, charging a reasonable $50 fee for lost games. What else is there to say about this service. It's just kind of blah.

Angelgamer: This service has the least titles (though I suspect Game Replay has even less), but is saved by decent prices, good customer service, and features including ratings and user reviews.

Deep Shark: I'm a little frightened by this service. It's been three days since I signed up for their free trial, and they still haven't shipped my games. Every other service has. This is ironic, since Deep Shark's slogan is "No waiting. Just gaming." The only thing I can figure is Deep Shark's new to this online business thing, and needs more time to work the kinks out. Their game info is lacking and they only have one rental package. About the only thing good about this service is relatively quick customer service during business hours.

Rentzero: What a laughable piece of crap Rentzero is. I tried to signup for their free trial, and got a bunch of website errors. Their customer service response time to try and resolve this issue was equally horrendous. They have high prices, no features, and their game info sucks. The only thing worthwhile about this service is the fact that they rent PC games. But why not just go with Player's Choice for that?
